Biohazard cleanup help across Michigan
Michigan is two peninsulas joined by the Mackinac Bridge, and most of its people live in the southern half of the Lower Peninsula. Metro Detroit, spread across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, is the largest center. Grand Rapids leads the west side, with Flint, Saginaw, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Kalamazoo in between. Interstates 75, 94, 96, and 69 and US 131 link those cities, while much of the north is forest, lakeshore, and small towns far from one another.
Water and winter define the work here. Lake effect snow falls heavily on the western shore and can slow travel for days, and deep cold keeps homes sealed for months. Many Michigan houses have full basements, and many families keep seasonal cottages that sit closed for long periods, so a death or a sewage problem may go unnoticed. Older factory era neighborhoods in Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw have aging wood frame homes. Technicians serving Michigan ZIP codes are trained and certified for these conditions and available 24/7.
Covered areas in Michigan
Michigan coverage is ZIP based, with 556 covered ZIP codes in 348 communities, nearly all in the Lower Peninsula. On the west side, coverage centers on Grand Rapids and Muskegon and the Lake Michigan shore. In the middle of the state it includes Flint, Saginaw, and Jackson. In the southeast it covers Ann Arbor and a wide band of Detroit suburbs such as Warren, Sterling Heights, Troy, Southfield, Dearborn, Livonia, and Pontiac, along with some Detroit ZIP codes. Give the ZIP code of the property to confirm that a crew is assigned.

Michigan crime victim compensation: Michigan Crime Victim Compensation Program
| Program | Michigan Crime Victim Compensation Program |
|---|---|
| Administered by | Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Victim Services |
| Maximum award | $45,000 |
| Crime scene cleanup benefit | $5,000 |
Michigan's Crime Victim Compensation Program is part of the Division of Victim Services at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. It may pay for medical care, counseling, lost earnings, funeral costs, and other out of pocket losses for people injured by a crime and for the families of those killed. Changes that took effect August 12, 2023 raised the total limit to $45,000 per claimant. State law, at MCL 18.361, lists crime scene cleanup at a residence or in a vehicle owned or leased by the victim or certain family members, up to $5,000 per crime scene, once the investigating police agency permits cleanup. The program pays after insurance and other sources, and it decides who is eligible.
Under MCL 18.355, a claim must be filed no later than 5 years after the crime, and the program may extend that period for good cause. Special timing applies to some crimes against children. The program sets the current rules on reporting the crime and cooperating with police.

How Michigan regulates biohazard waste
Michigan's law is the Medical Waste Regulatory Act, Part 138 of the Public Health Code, and it is run by the Medical Waste Regulatory Program at the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. The act and its rules, R 325.1541 to 325.1549, set requirements for how medical waste is packaged, labeled, stored, transported, treated, and disposed of, and facilities that produce it must register with the state. For a cleanup, that means sharps go in puncture resistant containers, contaminated materials are sealed and labeled, and the load goes to an approved treatment outlet instead of household trash. Michigan also operates its own workplace safety agency, MIOSHA, which enforces a state bloodborne infectious diseases standard in place of direct federal enforcement of 29 CFR 1910.1030.
Rule reference: Medical Waste Regulatory Act, Part 138 of the Public Health Code, MCL 333.13801 to 333.13832; Mich Admin Code R 325.1541 to 325.1549
Insurance and cleanup costs in Michigan
Michigan homeowners, renters, and commercial property policies may cover biohazard cleanup after a death, crime, or sewage backup, depending on the policy terms and any endorsements. Technicians can supply photos, a scope of work, and an itemized invoice for the adjuster. If you believe a claim was unfairly delayed or denied, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services, known as DIFS, accepts complaints and can answer questions about the claims process. It cannot order an insurer to pay, and coverage is never guaranteed.

Michigan biohazard cleanup questions
Does Michigan's crime victim program cover cleanup of a home or a vehicle?
It may. MCL 18.361 lists crime scene cleanup at a residence or in a vehicle owned or leased by the victim or certain relatives, up to $5,000 per crime scene, after the investigating police agency allows cleanup. That is part of a $45,000 overall limit per claimant. The Crime Victim Compensation Program at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reviews each claim and pays only what other sources do not.
Who regulates medical waste from a cleanup in Michigan?
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, usually called EGLE, runs the Medical Waste Regulatory Program under Part 138 of the Public Health Code. Its rules cover packaging, labeling, storage, transport, and treatment. Technicians serving Michigan ZIP codes seal and label contaminated materials and send them for approved treatment. Worker safety during the job falls under MIOSHA, the state's own occupational safety agency.
Does Michigan use coroners or medical examiners?
Michigan uses county medical examiners. Each county appoints a physician as medical examiner, and some counties share one office. The medical examiner, working with police, investigates sudden, violent, and unattended deaths. Cleanup can begin only after those officials finish and release the property. The county medical examiner's office or the detective on the case can confirm the release, and technicians will not enter before then.
Can technicians handle a closed up cottage or a home found after winter?
Yes, in covered ZIP codes. Seasonal cottages and homes left shut through a Michigan winter are a common setting for an unattended death or a long running leak. Cold slows decomposition, then a thaw or a restarted furnace releases odor quickly. Technicians assess basements, crawl spaces, and flooring for hidden damage. Heavy lake effect snow near Lake Michigan can affect travel, so call as early as you can.
Which parts of Michigan are covered?
Michigan has 556 covered ZIP codes. They concentrate around Grand Rapids and Muskegon in the west, Flint and Saginaw in the middle of the state, Ann Arbor and Jackson, and the Detroit suburbs of Oakland, Macomb, and western Wayne counties, including Warren, Troy, Southfield, and Dearborn. Coverage follows ZIP codes, so two nearby towns may differ. Share your ZIP code and the dispatcher will confirm.
